Inertial Sensing Systems for Advanced Chronic Condition Monitoring and Risk Prevention

University of Twente – The Netherlands (UT)

University of Twente / CTIT is a multidisciplinary research institute in Enschede, the Netherlands, within the area of telematics and information technology. The Pervasive Systems (PS) research group within University of Twente is the project coordinator of IS-ACTIVE.

The PS group is an interdisciplinary research group that investigates distributed and embedded systems architectures and technologies for bringing the flexibility of information technology to bear in every aspect of daily life. It foresees that people will be surrounded by embedded and flexibly networked systems that provide easily accessible yet unobtrusive support for an open-ended range of activities, to enrich daily life and to increase productivity at work.

Key areas in this paradigm are wireless sensor networks, ubiquitous computing and wearable computing. The common theme in these areas is on the development of large-scale, heterogeneous, wireless, distributed systems.

The PS group has a significant background on embedded system architectures covering the entire systems design trajectory from digital devices, efficient wireless networking protocols, distributed systems, as well as application designs.

The Pervasive Systems group coordinated the first large European project in wireless sensor networks, EYES, and the large national project Smart Surroundings, on the theme ambient intelligence. The group participated in several other EU FP5/6/7 projects on wireless sensing technologies: CoBIs, eSENSE, SENSEI, AWARE.
